New Home Cleaning Checklist: What to Clean Before Moving In

Just got the keys? Before you move a single box, clean these areas. A checklist from professional move-in cleaners.

New Home Cleaning Checklist: What to Clean Before You Unpack a Single Box

Moving into a new home — whether a new build or a resale — is one of those moments where cleaning before you move in makes everything easier than cleaning around your stuff after. You have empty rooms and total access. Use it.

Here's what to tackle, room by room, before a single box crosses the threshold.

Why Clean Before Moving In?

Even in a brand-new build, there's construction dust, adhesive residue, sticker residue on fixtures, and debris in places that didn't get final cleaned. In a resale home, you're cleaning up after someone else's household — their dust, their cooking residue, their bathroom habits. You don't know what cleaning standard the previous owners kept or how long ago the property was professionally cleaned.

Cleaning an empty home takes a fraction of the time it takes to clean around furniture and boxes. Do it now.

Kitchen (Before Appliances Are Plugged In)

  • Clean inside all cabinets and drawers — wipe shelves and lay fresh liner if desired
  • Clean the oven interior (or run self-clean cycle) before you use it for the first time
  • Wipe fridge interior and exterior — including the rubber door gaskets
  • Clean range hood and filter
  • Run the dishwasher with a cleaner tablet on an empty cycle
  • Sanitize the sink and disposal
  • Wipe all counters and backsplash

Bathrooms

  • Scrub the toilet thoroughly — inside bowl, exterior, base, and behind the tank
  • Clean tub and shower including grout — you're setting the baseline here
  • Wipe down vanity interior and sink
  • Clean mirrors and light fixtures
  • Mop the floor including grout lines
  • Check caulking around tub and toilet base — reseal if needed before you start using it

Bedrooms and Closets

  • Wipe down all closet shelving, rods, and floors — these often get missed in move-out cleans
  • Clean window sills and tracks
  • Wipe baseboards and door frames
  • Vacuum carpet thoroughly — or better, get it steam cleaned before furniture goes in

Living Areas

  • Dust ceiling fans, light fixtures, and vents — construction dust and previous occupant dust settles here
  • Wipe all light switches and outlets
  • Clean windows inside and the accessible exterior
  • Clean fireplace interior and glass if applicable
  • Steam clean carpets while the room is empty

Whole-Home Items

  • Replace furnace filter — start fresh in your new home
  • Clean all air vents
  • Check and wipe down garage surfaces if applicable
  • Clean laundry appliances — run the washer with cleaning solution before first use
