Indoor Air Quality in Winter: Why It Matters in Alberta Homes

Your house is sealed tight for 5 months. The air you're breathing matters. Here's how cleaning impacts indoor air quality during an Alberta winter.

You're Living in a Sealed Box

From roughly October through March, your Grande Prairie home is sealed against the cold. Windows shut. Doors shut. The furnace running continuously, recirculating the same air through the same ducts over the same dust, dander, and particles — day after day for five to six months. The EPA estimates that indoor air can be 2 to 5 times more polluted than outdoor air. In an Alberta winter, when there's zero natural ventilation, that number gets worse.

This isn't meant to scare you — it's meant to show you why cleaning matters even more during winter. The air you and your family breathe is directly affected by how clean your home is.

What's in Your Winter Air

The usual suspects in a sealed Alberta home:

  • Dust and dust mites: With no fresh air circulation, dust settles on every surface and gets redistributed every time the furnace kicks on. Dust mite levels peak in winter because heated indoor environments are their ideal habitat.
  • Pet dander: If you have pets (and in Grande Prairie, most people do), dander circulates through the forced-air system to every room. It accumulates faster when windows aren't opened to flush it out.
  • VOCs (volatile organic compounds): Off-gassing from furniture, paint, cleaning products, candles, and even new flooring. In a well-ventilated home these dissipate. In a sealed winter home, they concentrate.
  • Mold spores: Window condensation, bathroom moisture, and kitchen steam create conditions for mold growth. Spores go airborne and circulate through the HVAC system.
  • Cooking particles: Every time you cook, grease and particle matter become airborne. The range hood helps, but in a sealed home, these particles don't fully clear.

How Cleaning Improves Air Quality

Every cleaning action you take directly reduces airborne particles:

  • Vacuuming with a HEPA filter: Traps particles as small as 0.3 microns instead of blowing them back into the air. This is the single most important cleaning tool for air quality.
  • Damp dusting: Captures particles on contact instead of dispersing them. Dry dusting with a feather duster is almost useless — it just moves dust around.
  • Cleaning air vents and returns: These are the intake and output of your HVAC system. Dusty vents mean every cycle of air picks up and distributes more particles.
  • Washing bedding in hot water: Kills dust mites and removes accumulated dander from the surface where you spend 8 hours with your face pressed against fabric.
  • Mopping after vacuuming: Catches the fine particles that vacuuming stirs up but doesn't capture.

Beyond Cleaning: Air Quality Upgrades

  • Furnace filter: Upgrade to MERV 11-13. Change it every 2-3 months. This is the cheapest, highest-impact thing you can do for indoor air quality.
  • HEPA air purifiers: One in the bedroom, one in the main living area. Run continuously on low. These make a measurable difference, especially for allergy and asthma sufferers.
  • Humidity control: Use a hygrometer. Aim for 30-50% relative humidity. Too dry (below 30%) irritates airways and skin. Too humid (above 50%) feeds mold and dust mites. A whole-house humidifier on your furnace is the most consistent solution.
  • Ventilation when possible: On warmer winter days (above -10C), crack a window on two sides of the house for even 15 minutes. The burst of fresh air exchanges stale indoor air and makes an immediate difference.

Winter Cleaning for Better Breathing

Our winter cleaning schedule at Simply Done is designed with air quality in mind. We focus on the surfaces and systems that accumulate the most airborne particles — vent covers, baseboards, fabric surfaces, floors, and bathroom moisture areas. For our clients with allergies or respiratory concerns, regular cleaning during winter isn't just about appearance — it's a health investment. And we take that seriously.
