How Often Should You Actually Wash Everything? The Honest Guide

Sheets, towels, pillows, shower curtains, couch covers — how often do these things really need washing? The answer might surprise you.

The Questions Nobody Asks Out Loud

How often should you wash your sheets? Your towels? Your pillows? That shower curtain liner? Your couch cushion covers? These are the questions everyone wonders about but nobody asks at dinner parties. So let's just lay it all out — no judgment, just practical guidelines based on hygiene, not paranoia.

Bedding

  • Sheets and pillowcases: Every 1-2 weeks. Your body sheds skin cells, oils, and sweat every night. After two weeks, your sheets are hosting a microscopic ecosystem. If you have allergies, aim for weekly.
  • Duvet cover: Every 2-4 weeks. It's one layer removed from your body, so it doesn't accumulate as fast.
  • Comforter/duvet insert: 2-3 times per year. If it has a removable cover, the cover does the heavy lifting. Wash the insert at the change of seasons.
  • Pillows: Every 3-4 months. Yes, the actual pillow, not just the case. Check the care label — most can go in the washing machine. Use the gentle cycle and an extra spin. Dry thoroughly with dryer balls.
  • Mattress pad/protector: Monthly. This is your mattress's first line of defense against body moisture and allergens.

Bathroom

  • Bath towels: After 3-4 uses. Towels stay damp for hours after use, and bacteria love moisture. Hang them spread out to dry between uses — don't bunch them on a hook.
  • Hand towels: Every 2-3 days. Multiple people use these daily, and they rarely dry completely between uses.
  • Washcloths: After every use. These are in direct contact with your skin and stay wet. Toss them in the hamper after each shower.
  • Bath mats: Weekly. They absorb water from your feet every day and sit on the floor. Mold and mildew love bath mats.
  • Shower curtain liner: Monthly. Spray it down with a vinegar solution after each shower to slow mildew growth, but wash it properly once a month.

Kitchen

  • Dish towels: Every 2-3 days, or daily if you use them to dry dishes or wipe hands frequently. Kitchen towels are one of the most bacteria-heavy items in your home.
  • Dish sponge: Replace every 1-2 weeks. You can microwave a damp sponge for 2 minutes to disinfect between replacements, but sponges have a short lifespan.
  • Oven mitts and pot holders: Monthly, or immediately after spills. These get ignored because they live in a drawer, but they touch food surfaces.

Living Areas

  • Throw blankets: Every 2-4 weeks, depending on use. If they're decorative and rarely used, monthly is fine. If the whole family snuggles under them nightly, biweekly.
  • Couch cushion covers: Every 1-2 months if removable. Spot-clean spills immediately.
  • Curtains/drapes: Every 3-6 months. They collect dust, pet dander, and cooking residue from the air. More often if you have pets or smokers in the home.
  • Area rugs: Vacuum weekly, deep clean every 6-12 months. Professional cleaning extends their life significantly.

The Alberta Factor

In Grande Prairie, our dry winters and forced-air heating create extra dust. Furnace air circulates particles throughout your home constantly from October to April. During winter months, washing bedding and towels slightly more frequently — and dusting surfaces regularly — makes a noticeable difference in how your home feels and how well you sleep.

If this list feels overwhelming, start with the big wins: sheets weekly, towels after 3 uses, kitchen towels every couple days. Those three changes alone make a significant hygiene difference. And of course, when you need a deep clean of everything else, we're always here.
