A retired couple with no pets in a tidy two-bedroom has very different needs than a family of five with two dogs and a mudroom that sees action every single day.
Here's how to think through the right schedule for your home and your life.
What's the Difference Between Regular Cleaning and Deep Cleaning?
Regular cleaning — vacuuming, wiping counters, cleaning toilets — keeps things presentable week to week. Deep cleaning goes further: inside the oven, behind the fridge, grout lines, baseboards, under furniture, ceiling fans, window tracks, inside cabinets. It's everything that gets skipped during a regular clean and builds up over time.
Both matter. Regular cleaning maintains your home. Deep cleaning resets it.
Deep Cleaning Frequency by Household Type
Single Person or Couple, No Pets
A full deep clean every 6 months is generally enough, paired with a good regular cleaning routine. Spring and fall make natural timing anchors. If you're already keeping up with weekly or biweekly maintenance cleans, your home won't accumulate as much in between.
Family with Kids
Kids generate mess that adults simply don't. Sticky surfaces, crayon marks, food under furniture, craft supplies in unexpected places. For active family homes, we recommend a deep clean every 3–4 months. Pay particular attention to kids' bedrooms and play areas, which accumulate allergens and bacteria faster than other rooms.
Pet Owners
Pets are wonderful and hard on homes. Pet dander, tracked-in dirt, hair embedded in carpet fibers, and odour that settles into upholstery — these require more frequent attention. If you have one or two pets, aim for a deep clean every 3 months. Multiple pets or shedding breeds may warrant every 6–8 weeks, particularly for carpet and upholstery.
Allergy Sufferers
If anyone in your household has seasonal allergies, asthma, or sensitivities to dust mites or pet dander, deep cleaning frequency becomes a health question, not just a comfort one. Every 2–3 months is a reasonable baseline, with particular focus on carpet steam cleaning, mattress cleaning, and HVAC vent maintenance.
What to Prioritize in a Deep Clean
Not every room accumulates at the same rate. Focus your deep cleaning energy where it matters most:
- Kitchen: Oven interior, range hood filters, behind and under appliances, pantry shelves
- Bathrooms: Grout, exhaust fans, behind the toilet, inside medicine cabinets
