The Holiday Clean Problem
Guests are arriving in three hours and you need the house to look great. You can't deep clean everything — there isn't time. What you need is professional prioritization: the knowledge of exactly what guests notice, and what they don't, so every minute you have counts.
This is how our Simply Done Cleaning team thinks about efficiency. Here's the playbook.
The Core Principle: Clean What Guests See and Use
Guests form their impression of your home within the first few minutes of arrival. They see the entryway, the main living space, the kitchen, and the bathroom they use. That's where your time goes. The laundry room, your bedroom, the home office — unless there's a reason a guest will be in those spaces, they're low priority today.
Hour One: Entry, Living Room, and Visible Surfaces
The first impression is set before guests sit down. Start here.
- Entryway: Clear clutter, sweep the floor, wipe down the coat hooks and bench if you have one. This is the first thing people see — make it feel welcoming
- Living room: Clear every surface — coffee table, side tables, shelving. Clutter is more noticeable to guests than dust. Fluff cushions and straighten throws
- Quick vacuum: Run the vacuum through the main living area and any carpet guests will walk on. Focus on the center of the room and the area near seating
- Wipe visible surfaces: Coffee table, TV stand, any surfaces at eye level. Use a damp microfibre cloth — it picks up dust efficiently without needing spray on every surface
- Windows and mirrors: A streak-free mirror and clean windows elevate a room's appearance noticeably. A vinegar-dampened cloth handles both
Hour Two: Kitchen and Guest Bathroom
These two rooms get the most traffic and scrutiny.
Kitchen:
- Clear the counters completely — appliances, mail, anything that doesn't belong
- Wipe all counters and the stovetop
- Clean the sink and faucet — a shiny sink makes the whole kitchen look cleaner
- Hide dirty dishes in the dishwasher (even if it's not time to run it)
- Wipe cabinet fronts near the stove — grease splatter accumulates here
- Quick sweep of the floor
Guest bathroom:
- Clean the toilet — inside the bowl and the entire exterior
- Wipe the sink and faucet to a shine
- Clean the mirror
- Replace hand towels with fresh ones — this one detail signals that the bathroom was specifically prepared
- Put out soap and make sure the toilet paper roll is replaced and has enough on it
- Quick mop or wipe of the floor
- Empty the trash can
Hour Three: Final Pass and Atmosphere
- Floors throughout the main areas — a quick sweep or vacuum pass covers anything knocked loose during cleaning
- Scent: Open a window for ten minutes if weather allows — fresh air beats any candle. If you're using candles, light them 30 minutes before guests arrive, not at the door
- Lighting: Warm lighting is more forgiving than bright overhead lights. Dim what you can or use lamps in the living area
- Clutter sweep: Do one last walk-through and grab anything that doesn't belong in the visible spaces. Put it in a basket in a bedroom if needed — you can sort it later
- Entryway reset: Final check — this is the last thing you see before guests arrive and the first thing they see when they do
What to Skip
Don't waste your three hours on bedrooms guests won't see, deep cleaning the oven, or organizing closets. Invisible clean doesn't count today. Visible and welcoming is the goal.
