Fall Cleaning in Alberta: Your October Home Reset

October in Grande Prairie means mud, furnace season, and family time indoors. Here's how we prep our clients' homes — and how you can do the same before the cold really hits.

There's a particular kind of October day in Grande Prairie that tells you summer is really, truly done. The sky goes flat grey, the yard is half-frozen mud, and suddenly everyone's boots are back by the door and nobody's going anywhere for a while. We love this time of year — honestly, we do. But it does mean your home is about to work a lot harder than it did in July.

We've walked through hundreds of Grande Prairie homes at this exact turn of the season, and we've learned what makes the difference between a home that feels cozy and settled through winter, and one that feels like it's been fighting the cold since October. It comes down to a focused fall reset — not a full-scale spring cleaning, but a targeted check-in on the things that matter most as we head indoors.

Here's what we do, and what you can do too.

Start with the Air You're About to Breathe

When the furnace kicks on for the first time this season, whatever has been sitting in your vents and filters all summer goes straight into the air your family breathes. Before that first cold snap hits, swap out your furnace filter — and while you're at it, wipe down your vent covers. A damp cloth and two minutes per vent makes a real difference. If anyone in your home has allergies or asthma, this one step alone is worth the effort.

Don't forget your bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans. Pull off the covers, vacuum the dust bunnies that have accumulated since spring, and let them do their job properly all winter. In a climate like ours, proper ventilation keeps moisture under control — which means less mold risk and better air quality all season long.

The Entryway: Your First Line of Defence

Grande Prairie mud season is real, and it lasts longer than any of us would like. Your entryway is going to take a beating from now until April, so set it up for success now before the chaos begins.

Deep clean the floor — grout included if you have tile — so you're starting from a clean baseline. Add a quality boot tray if you don't already have one. Move any summer clutter out so there's actually room for winter coats, snow pants, and all the gear that comes with them. A home that has a clear, clean landing zone at the door stays cleaner everywhere else — it's one of the biggest things we notice in homes that manage winter well.

Windows and Ledges Before They're Sealed Up

You're about to close your windows for six months. Do a quick wipe-down of your window sills and ledges before you do — they collect a surprising amount of summer dust, insect debris, and condensation residue. It takes about twenty minutes for a whole house and you'll appreciate having done it come January when the light is low and every surface shows.

If you have storm windows or window insulation kits, now's the time to put them up. Clean the glass first so you're not sealing in a summer's worth of grime.

The Kitchen Goes Into Comfort Food Mode

Fall in Alberta means soups, stews, baking, and a kitchen that works overtime. Give your oven a proper clean before the season really starts — baked-on grease from summer barbecues and quick weeknight meals is much easier to deal with now than after six weeks of roasting and baking. Wipe down the backsplash, degrease the range hood filter, and make sure your refrigerator coils aren't clogged with dust (a quick vacuum from the back or bottom does it).

Starting the baking season with a clean kitchen isn't just about appearances — it's genuinely more enjoyable to cook in a space that feels fresh and organized.

Baseboards and Behind Furniture

When the furnace runs all winter, it circulates air constantly — and that air picks up dust and deposits it along baseboards and behind furniture. Getting ahead of this in October, before the heat runs continuously, means you won't be dealing with built-up dust all season. Move the couch, pull the beds out a foot, and wipe everything down. Your allergies will thank you in February.

You Don't Have to Do It All Yourself

We know October is busy. School routines, hockey schedules, Thanksgiving, and the general scramble to button up the yard before the ground freezes — there's a lot happening. If a fall reset sounds like one more thing you don't have time for, that's exactly what we're here for.

A seasonal deep clean from our team covers all of this and more, leaving you with a home that's genuinely ready for winter. Not just surface-clean — actually clean, from the vents to the baseboards.

Reach out to us and we'll get you on the schedule before the first real snowfall. Because our passion for cleaning is really about one thing: giving you the freedom to enjoy this season with your family, not spend it scrubbing.
