Order Matters More Than Products
Here's a secret from our cleaning team: the products you use matter way less than the order you clean in. We've watched clients spray expensive cleaners on every surface and still end up with a bathroom that doesn't feel truly clean — because they cleaned the floor first and then dripped dirty mirror water all over it. Or they wiped the counter before the mirror, and all the dust from the mirror landed on the freshly cleaned counter.
Our team follows the same sequence in every bathroom, every time. It's efficient, it's thorough, and it works. Here it is.
Step 1: Apply Products and Let Them Work
Before you pick up a cloth, apply your cleaners:
- Spray the shower/tub with bathroom cleaner — walls, fixtures, floor of the tub
- Squirt toilet bowl cleaner inside the bowl and under the rim
- If the sink has buildup, spray that too
Now walk away for 5-10 minutes. Let the products do the chemical work. This dwell time is the difference between scrubbing for 20 minutes and wiping clean in 2. Most people skip this step and make the job twice as hard.
Step 2: Dry Dust (Top Down)
While your products are soaking, dry dust everything from top to bottom:
- Exhaust fan cover
- Light fixtures
- Top of medicine cabinet or mirror frame
- Shelves and their contents
- Towel bars and hooks
- Toilet paper holder
- Baseboards
Dry dusting before wet cleaning prevents muddy streaks and ensures dust doesn't settle onto freshly cleaned surfaces.
Step 3: Mirror and Glass
Clean the mirror now, while the surfaces below it are still waiting to be wiped. Any drips from the mirror will be cleaned up in the next steps. Spray with glass cleaner and wipe with a microfiber cloth or paper towel in an S-pattern from top to bottom — not circles.
Step 4: Counter, Sink, and Fixtures
Now tackle the vanity area:
- Wipe the counter completely — behind the faucet, around the soap dispenser, along the backsplash
- Scrub the sink basin, including the drain and overflow hole
- Clean the faucet and handles — hard water deposits love these spots. An old toothbrush is your best friend here
- Wipe the front and sides of the vanity cabinet
Step 5: Shower/Tub
Those products have been soaking for 10+ minutes now. Time to scrub:
- Scrub walls top to bottom — use a brush for textured surfaces, a cloth for smooth tile
- Hit the fixtures — shower head, taps, door handle or curtain rod
- Scrub the tub floor or shower floor
- Rinse everything thoroughly
- Wipe the shower door or wash the curtain liner
- Dry fixtures with a cloth to prevent water spots
Step 6: Toilet (Always Last Before Floor)
Work outside to inside, top to bottom:
- Wipe the top of the tank, then the front and sides
- Clean the lid — top and underside
- Clean the seat — top and underside
- Wipe the rim area thoroughly
- Clean the exterior of the bowl — front, sides, base
- Scrub inside the bowl with the toilet brush
- The base and floor around the toilet — this is the most neglected area in most bathrooms
Step 7: Floor (Always Last)
Everything above has been cleaned. Any dust, drips, or debris has fallen to the floor. Now clean it:
- Sweep or vacuum first to pick up hair and debris
- Mop from the far corner toward the door — don't mop yourself into a corner
- Pay extra attention to the area around the toilet base and behind the door
The Whole Thing Takes 20-25 Minutes
Following this sequence, a standard bathroom takes about 20-25 minutes to clean properly. That's it. The order eliminates wasted effort and backtracking. Try it once and you'll never clean your bathroom any other way. And if you'd rather not do it at all? That's what we're here for.
