Bathroom Mistakes That Keep Your Space from Feeling Really Clean
Bathrooms get cleaned more often than almost any other room in the house, yet they're also the room where people consistently feel like the clean doesn't last. There's a reason for that — and it usually comes down to a few habits that work against you. Our Simply Done Cleaning team has cleaned thousands of bathrooms in Grande Prairie homes. Here are the five mistakes we see most often, and what to do instead.
Mistake 1: Spraying and Wiping Immediately
This is the most common error and the one with the biggest impact. When you spray a cleaner and wipe it off right away, the product doesn't have time to do its job. Disinfectants need dwell time — typically one to four minutes of wet contact with the surface to actually kill bacteria and break down grime.
What to do instead: Spray everything first — toilet, sink, shower — and then come back and wipe. The product is working while you wait. This is how professionals sequence a bathroom clean: spray everything, then go room to room to let cleaners work before wiping.
Mistake 2: Cleaning the Toilet Wrong
Most people clean the toilet bowl and call it done. The outside of the toilet — base, tank, behind the seat, underside of the lid — gets ignored. These are surfaces that collect bacteria, dust, and splatter, and they're why bathrooms develop that persistent smell even after cleaning.
What to do instead: After applying bowl cleaner inside, wipe the entire exterior top to bottom. Use a separate cloth for the outside versus the bowl. Don't forget the underside of the seat, the hinges where the seat attaches, and the very base where the toilet meets the floor.
Mistake 3: Ignoring the Shower Curtain and Door Tracks
Shower curtain liners develop pink and black mildew near the bottom and along the rings — and most people ignore it until it's very visible. Shower door tracks collect soap scum, hair, and standing water and become breeding grounds for mould.
What to do instead: Toss plastic shower curtain liners in the washing machine with a cup of white vinegar on a warm cycle every month or two. For door tracks, fill them with undiluted white vinegar, let it sit for 15 minutes, then scrub with an old toothbrush and rinse.
Mistake 4: Neglecting the Exhaust Fan
The exhaust fan is one of the most important fixtures in your bathroom — it removes moisture that causes mould and mildew. Most people never clean it. A clogged, dusty fan is significantly less effective and can become a fire hazard over time.
What to do instead: Twice a year, remove the fan cover (most snap off), vacuum out the dust from the cover and the fan mechanism itself, and wipe the cover before replacing it. Takes five minutes and makes a real difference in air quality and mould prevention.
Mistake 5: Using the Same Cloth on Everything
Using one cloth to wipe the sink, then the toilet, then the counter spreads bacteria between surfaces. This is surprisingly common — even among people who feel they're being thorough.
What to do instead: Use colour-coded cloths for different areas, or at minimum use separate cloths for the toilet versus all other surfaces. Microfibre cloths are washable and effective — pick up a bundle, assign them by colour, and launder between uses. The toilet gets its own cloth. Always.
The One Thing That Makes the Biggest Difference
Beyond the five mistakes above, the single biggest factor in how a bathroom feels after cleaning is how often grout gets addressed. Grout absorbs moisture and product residue over time, shifting from light to dark and contributing to that dingy look even in an otherwise clean bathroom. A stiff-bristled grout brush and a baking soda paste once a month keeps it from getting to the point where it requires professional restoration.
If your bathroom grout has gotten away from you, or you'd like a professional deep clean that tackles all of the above, we'd love to help. Simply Done Cleaning serves Grande Prairie and surrounding areas — call us at 780-831-8950 to book.
